The Arizona Cardinals’ arrival at Levi’s Sunday signifies the beginning of the toughest stretch of back-to-back games for the 49ers this season. The 7-1 Cardinals, however, are severely compromised with injuries to their biggest stars — quarterback Kyler Murray (left ankle) and wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins (hamstring). Both Murray and Hopkins were declared inactive. Former 49er Colt McCoy will step in at quarterback for Arizona.
In order for the 49ers to get back into the NFC playoff chase, they’ll likely need to beat at least the Cardinals on Sunday or the 7-1 Los Angeles Rams next Sunday.
Arizona, which is coming off a disappointing, last-second loss to the Packers a week ago Thursday, does have history on its side. The Cards have beaten the 49ers five of the last six times they’ve met. In addition, the 49ers are riding a long winless streak at home — they haven’t won a regular season game at Levi’s in more than a year.
The 49ers hope to ride another solid Jimmy Garoppolo performance to their second straight win after he threw for 322 yards and ran for a pair of touchdowns in last Sunday’s 33-22 victory in his hometown of Chicago.
It will be Garoppolo’s first start against Arizona since last year’s season-opening loss to the Cards. 49ers rookie quarterback Trey Lance made his first NFL start on Oct. 10 in Arizona, the last time the two teams met. Lance struggled throwing the ball — 15-of-29 for 166 yards and an interception — but ran for 89 yards in the 17-10 San Francisco loss.
Follow along with our reporters Cam Inman and Jerry McDonald, columnist Dieter Kurtenbach and other analysts providing their thoughts about the game.
