Son arrested in Walnut Creek stabbing death of his mother

A 74-year-old woman died in a stabbing early Monday morning, and her son was arrested on suspicion of murder, police said.

Police arrested Nicholas Roth, 39, at the scene in the 2600 block of Jones Road, after officers were called there just after 5 a.m., according to a statement from Walnut Creek police Lt. Jeff Slater. Roth is a part-time employee with the Bay Area News Group.

Officers had received a call regarding a woman asking for help after being stabbed, Slater said. When officers arrived, life-saving measures already were being performed on Darlene Roth. An ambulance rushed her to a hospital, but she was pronounced dead there.

Slater said police at the scene determined that Nicholas Roth was the main suspect in the stabbing.

The homicide was the fourth in the city of Walnut Creek in 2021. The city had four homicides in 2018 but did not have any in 2019 or 2020.

Police did not release any more details, citing the investigation. They did not say what led up to the stabbing.

They also urged anyone with information to contact Det. Kimberly Gerstner at gerstner@walnutcreekpd.com.
