The son of basketball great Kareem Abdul-Jabbar pleaded guilty to stabbing a neighbor during a dispute over trash cans.
Immediately after Tuesday’s plea, Adam Abdul-Jabbar, 29, was sentenced to six months in jail.
The attack occurred around 10 p.m. on June 9, 2020, in San Clemente. The 60-year-old neighbor had reportedly confronted Abdul-Jabbar about trash cans left in their shared driveway. The younger man then allegedly stabbed him multiple times, including in the head, with what prosecutors described as a large hunting knife.
The neighbor was driven by his wife to a hospital, where he collapsed outside the emergency room. He had suffered a broken skull and extreme blood loss, the prosecutors said.
Abdul-Jabbar was charged with three counts of assault with a deadly weapon and a count of carrying a dirk or dagger, all felonies, with sentencing enhancements for inflicting great bodily injury on the victim.
He had faced up to nine years and eight months in prison but made a deal in return for pleading guilty to all charges.
He is scheduled to report to jail on Jan. 7, according to court records.
Abdul-Jabbar is the youngest of the 74-year-old basketball legend’s five children, the result of a short relationship with a Texas woman. The booking log said he is 6-foot-7 and 180 pounds and listed his occupation as “GameStop.” The police report said he shared the San Clemente condo with “an elderly roommate.”
