One dead in Pleasanton after car flips onto its side, hits pole

A person died Thursday night when a car lost control on a Pleasanton road and ended up slamming into a light pole, police said.

The fatal wreck happened around 10:30 p.m. on W. Las Positas Road. A woman driving the car was the only person in it. Authorities did not immediately give her age or identify her.

West Las Positas Road between Hopyard Road and Coronado Lane remained closed into Friday afternoon but was expected to be re-opened by 12:30 p.m., according to police.

Officers arrived to find the Toyota Avalon on its driver’s side, just east of the Hopyard Road intersection, Pleasanton police Capt. Kurt Schlehuber said in a statement. The light pole went through the car’s roof, crushing it into the passenger’s compartment, he said.

The driver was pronounced dead at the scene.

Schlehuber said a witness told police the Toyota was speeding and that it struck the curb at the center median when the road began to bend into a curve. It flipped on its side and then hit the light pole, he said.

Police have not determined whether drugs, alcohol or distracted driving are a cause. They asked anyone who may have information to contact their traffic department at 925-931-5100.
