Former Raiders receiver Henry Ruggs appeared in Las Vegas court Wednesday morning, less than 30 hours after police say he caused a fiery crash that left a 23-year-old woman dead.
Ruggs, 22, faces felony charges of DUI resulting in death and reckless driving.
At his initial court appearance, prosecutors said Ruggs’ Corvette was traveling 156 miles per hour about two seconds before it rear-ended the woman’s Toyota Rav4. At the time the airbags deployed, his car was still going faster than 120 mph, they said.
Ruggs’ blood-alcohol level was more than twice the legal limit of 0.08 percent, according to the Clark County District Attorney’s office, and investigators found a loaded handgun in his car.
The Raiders released Ruggs Tuesday night. If convicted on the charge of DUI resulting in death, he faces a minimum of two years in prison.
Police have not yet identified the woman killed in the crash. A dog in her vehicle was also killed.
Ruggs and his girlfriend, who was riding in the car, were treated for injuries at a nearby hospital before he was booked into jail.
Judge Joe Bonaventure set bail at $150,000. Prosecutors had requested it be set at $1 million.
Ruggs’ attorneys, David Chesnoff and Richard Schonfeld, released a statement Tuesday saying they will conduct their own investigation and asked that “everyone reserve judgment until all the facts are gathered.”
Ruggs was the leading receiver for the first-place Raiders with 469 yards this season on 24 catches and two touchdowns. The 2020 first-round pick (No. 12 overall) caught 26 passes for 452 yards and two scores in 13 games (12 starts) in his rookie season. The Raiders, without Ruggs, face the Giants in New York on Sunday.
