SAN JOSE — William Eklund is being returned back to his club team in Sweden.
The Sharks had to make a decision by Saturday as to whether to keep Eklund with the organization or return him to his club team in Sweden, Djurgarden. The Sharks selected Eklund in the first round, seventh overall, in July’s NHL Draft.
Eklund played his ninth game with the Sharks on Thursday night, going without a point in San Jose’s 5-3 loss to the St. Louis Blues.
After the game, general manager Doug Wilson had to finalize a decision whether to keep Eklund around and let him play his 10th game Saturday against New Jersey, thereby burning the first year of his entry-level contract. Or, send him back to play with Djurgarden of the Swedish Hockey League and delay the start of his three-year deal.
Ultimately, the Sharks decided to return Eklund to his homeland. He had four points, all assists, through nine games. Three of his four points have come on the power play.
