Roughly a week after launching satellite text messaging in Australia, Telstra announced that more than a million messages have already been sent using the service.
Using SpaceX’s Starlink satellite array, Telstra’s satellite text messaging service lets customers send texts when outside of standard network coverage. At first, the service only supported Samsung Galaxy S25 phones but quickly expanded to include several iPhone models.
Voice calls and internet access via satellite are part of Telstra’s future plans. For now, it looks like plenty of rural Australians are already taking advantage of the new technology. Telstra says it’s refining the service as more people use it, including adding more compatible devices.
