Hisense HT Saturn surround sound system has a French twist

Hisense wants to make home surround sound systems more affordable, launching the HT Saturn in Australia.

Comprised of four separate speaker units and a subwoofer, the HT Saturn is a 4.1.2-channel surround sound system priced at $1,199. It’s a different approach from the mid-range home appliance brand; it normally focuses on soundbar units supported by smaller speakers.

This approach involves surrounding you with speakers positioned front on and from behind, designed to bring the sound from multiple angles. Hisense claims the result is “opera grade sound”, resulting from a partnership with audio specialist Devialet.

Many brands claim their speakers support Dolby Atmos and DTS: X audio formats, but not all of them fully reproduce the all-encompassing 3D sound the format is known for. To that end, Hisense says all four of the standalone speaker units include up-firing speakers, which are needed to hear the sound from above.

With all speakers combined, the HT Saturn produces 720W of audio power. That’s more power than any of Hisense’s current soundbars in Australia, with the extra benefit of a more comprehensive surround sound setup.

Hisense also continues the trend from TV makers by giving a musical name to its audio-syncing feature. Called “Hi-Concerto” the technology enables the HT Saturn to synchronise with recent Hisense TVs and add the TV’s built-in speakers to the surround sound system. It’s a similar technique to LG’s Wow Orchestra and Samsung’s Q-Symphony technologies, so a TV’s speakers don’t go unused when connected to an external sound system.

You don’t have to worry about wires either; each HT Saturn speaker talks to one another wirelessly. Hisense’s system supports Bluetooth 5.3, HDMI, and optical inputs, so there’s a decent level of flexibility.

From both a cost and wire-free perspective, it’s encouraging to see more affordable surround sound systems on the market. The Hisense HT Saturn is out now in Australia from retailers including Appliances Online and Videopro.
