WhatsApp, one of the world’s most popular messaging platforms, will start showing ads to users. The move from the Meta-owned app was announced via an official blog post alongside a range of business-centric features.
At this stage, ads won’t appear in your WhatsApp messages, only in the “Updates” tab where users can subscribe to channels. It’s a philosophical reversal from the original owners of WhatsApp, who refused to put advertising in the messaging platform.
Of the change, WhatsApp’s official word is that it wants to “build a business that does not interrupt your personal chats” and that advertising in the Updates tab is its solution. Now all that’s left is to see how its 1.5 billion daily users respond to the move.
