BERKELEY — A man was killed Wednesday night when his vehicle, which may have been speeding, ended up in the water at the Berkeley Marina after apparently crashing into a tree, authorities said.
The Alameda County Coroner’s Office identified the man Thursday as James Israel, 58, of San Anselmo.
The crash was reported about 7:43 p.m. Wednesday.
Police said initial reports were that the man was in a vehicle going westbound on University Avenue when it possibly struck some trees in the area of University Avenue and Marina Boulevard before plunging into the marina waters.
Berkeley firefighters found Israel dead inside the vehicle. Police are trying to determine why he was in Berkeley.Police are continuing to investigate the crash and said speed may have been a factor.
