More Australians are using eSIM technology than ever, according to new data from Vodafone about customer habits.
eSIM uptake has increased in Australia over the past 12 months, with last year’s national Optus outage viewed as a catalyst. According to Vodafone, one in three of its customers now use eSIM.
As listed in TPG Telecom’s (Vodafone Australia’s parent company) half-year financial report, there are more than four million active Vodafone plans across postpaid and prepaid plans. Based on that, there are likely more than 1.2 million Vodafone eSIM plans in the wild.
Embedded SIMs, better known as eSIM, ditch physical cards in favour of loading your carrier data directly into your phone’s hardware. However, it requires an eSIM-compatible device to work. Most of the best phones in Australia support the technology, including more budget handsets like Motorola’s Moto G34 5G.
With no physical card required, eSIM is seen as an easy way to shop around and find the cheapest SIM plans without needing to visit a store. Many compatible phones also support multiple SIMs, which is helpful for separating work and personal phone use. Gone are the days of needing two separate phones for work and play. Tourists and travellers also benefit from connecting to different networks in a matter of minutes.
