Amazon has launched its next-gen Echo Show 15 smart display, the brand’s digital organiser and entertainment hub for the modern home. It’s the sort of thing you place prominently in the kitchen or mount on a wall where everyone can easily access it.
Succeeding the 2022 model, the new Echo Show 15 directly addresses some of the previous iteration’s core shortcomings. Our review of the now-obsolete version complained about the sound and camera quality; areas the 2024 model has worked on.
Amazon’s latest version has a 13MP camera, up from 5MP, benefitting from a reported 60% larger field-of-view and a 3x zoom. It also automatically frames subjects, putting you front and centre. Noise reduction also comes as one of the headline features, helping create a clearer result when on calls.
In terms of speaker improvements, Amazon quotes “double the bass” of the 2022 Show 15, indicating a punchier sound this time around. It’s an important upgrade to make, considering the Show doubles as a Fire TV device you can use for streaming movies and music.
Streaming should also see better performance due to the upgrade to Wi-Fi 6E technology. It’s Amazon’s first Echo device with the faster Wi-Fi protocol, meaning better wireless speeds and latency, provided your router supports it. While it may not be the latest and greatest Wi-Fi 7 standard as sported by Amazon’s high-end Eero range, Wi-Fi 6E is still a nice upgrade.
The 2024 Echo Show 15 gets added Zigbee and Thread support, so it should play nicer with a wider range of smart home devices. Otherwise, the smart display retains the same 15.6-inch Full HD screen as its predecessor.
Out now in Australia, the 2024 Echo Show 15 costs $549 via Amazon, Officeworks, and JB Hi-Fi.
