Samsung’s latest addition to its affordable A-series of phones, the Galaxy A16, steps up the software support in a way that leaves other brands in the dust.
New to Australia, the $349 Samsung Galaxy A16 will get six years of operating system updates and six years of security updates. That’s unheard of in a phone this cheap. Most handsets priced between $300-500 come with two years of post-launch software support.
In a sign of the changing times, Samsung promised four years of OS upgrades with its pricier Galaxy A55 and Galaxy A35 phones. Meanwhile, the flagship Galaxy S24 range gets seven years.
Back to the Galaxy A16, Samsung’s new budget 5G handset gets a bigger 6.7-inch Super AMOLED display, up from the A15’s 6.5-inch stature. Part of this is due to the pared-back bezels, while the overall phone body is slimmer.
Driving the internals is an octa-core MediaTek chip with 4GB of RAM and 128GB of built-in storage. For photography, the phone has a 50MP main camera alongside a 5MP ultra-wide sensor and a 2MP macro lens.
Unlike the Galaxy A55, the A16 doesn’t support eSIM, the increasingly popular cardless technology. There are cheaper phones that are compatible with eSIM, like the Moto G34, but it doesn’t appear to be a priority for Samsung at this stage.
Out now in Australia, you can pick up the Galaxy A16 in “Blue Black”, which is somewhere between the two colours. Optus currently has a promotion selling the phone for $1 per month with one of its plans, further bringing down the handset’s cost.
