Google’s Gemini Live assistant now free to use on iPhone

Google is keen to corner the AI market, now launching its Gemini assistant app on iPhones, including free access to its conversational Gemini Live feature. At the time of writing, it’s jumped straight to third place on the App Store’s productivity app charts.

Originally launching as a paid feature ($32.99 per month in Australia) alongside Google’s Pixel 9 range, Gemini Live is now free to use across both Android and iOS phones. Unlike older voice assistants, it’s meant to enable more natural and free-flowing conversational queries.

I was impressed by Gemini Live’s speed and accuracy when I tested an early version on the Google Pixel 9 Pro, but its lack of cited sources made it tricky to fact-check information. At the time, it felt like a nifty evolution of voice assistants, but not one I’d pay extra money for, so the free access makes it more attractive.

Coinciding with the recent Apple Intelligence launch, Google’s Gemini app feels deliberately planned to claim top billing as the on-device AI assistant of choice. The app also supports text-based search queries, generative image production, and linking with other Google apps.

Google’s timing also gets in before Australian English comes to Apple Intelligence. At the moment, Aussies need to set the device language to US English to use Apple’s generative AI features. Meanwhile, Australian English is already supported by Gemini.
