Nintendo has nonchalantly confirmed that current Switch games will be backward compatible with its successor, the yet-to-be-announced console the internet has dubbed the “Nintendo Switch 2”.
Following the company’s latest financial results, a statement attributed to Shuntaro Furukawa, President of Nintendo, was shared on X, confirming the future hardware’s compatibility.
“At today’s Corporate Management Policy Briefing, we announced that Nintendo Switch software will also be playable on the successor to Nintendo Switch,” the post on Nintendo’s official X account said. “Nintendo Switch Online will be available on the successor to Nintendo Switch as well.”
Despite no official confirmation of the so-called Nintendo Switch 2, it’s reassuring to know your current games will work on the next console. It’s currently unknown whether this means Nintendo’s next device will continue to use cartridges or if backward compatibility will only work digitally.
Nintendo recently revised its financial forecasts off the back of lower year-on-year Nintendo Switch sales. Since launching in 2017, the hybrid console has shipped more than 146 million units, making it one of the best-selling consoles of all time.
Nintendo also updated its best-selling games list, with The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom sold 2.58 million units since its September launch. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe remains the Nintendo Switch’s best-selling game, followed by Animal Crossing: New Horizons, and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.
Given the particularly long gap between major hardware, speculation is rife about Nintendo’s upcoming hardware. The company used its financial report to reaffirm plans that it will announce before the end of its current financial year, which falls on April 2025.
For now, Furukawa’s statement only mentions that “further information about the successor to Nintendo Switch, including its compatibility with Nintendo Switch, will be announced at a later date.”
