Netflix Basic is no more in Australia. Previously the cheapest plan without ads, Netflix is starting to redirect subscribers to its ad-supported tier instead.
As reported by WhistleOut Australia‘s Dylan Crismale, Netflix has started contacting customers on its Basic plan that it will soon bring the $12.99 monthly plan to an end. Netflix Basic hasn’t been available to new subscribers for over a year, although it was still supported for existing subscribers.
Customers still on Basic will be moved over to the Standard with ads plan, priced at $7.99 per month. Launched in Australia in 2022, it currently supports 1080p quality and two concurrent streams on different devices. A downside of the ads-based plan is that not every movie and TV show is available. Some content will have a lock icon, meaning it’s not available to stream at that subscription tier.
The cheapest current Netflix plan in Australia without ads is Standard, currently priced at $18.99 per month. For cinephiles, the 4K-compatible Premium plan costs $25.99. Netflix most recently raised prices midway through 2024, in the wake of the streaming platform’s crackdown on password sharing.
It adds to what has been a busy few weeks for streaming services in Australia. Foxtel recently increased the price of a Kayo Premium subscription, while halting streaming in “very remote” locations. Disney also made waves when it announced that ESPN content is coming to Disney+ in Australia and New Zealand soon.
