Motorola’s budget phones get camera upgrades and bigger batteries

Motorola has kicked off its 2025 range with a couple of entry-level phones, the Moto G15 and Moto G05, both priced under $230.

Starting with the cheapest mode, the Moto G05 succeeds last year’s G04 model with a few iterative upgrades. It retains the 720p screen of its predecessor with the same 90Hz refresh rate, while slightly expanding the size to 6.7 inches. For an entry-level phone, its 1,000 nits peak brightness is impressive, almost beating out the $999 iPhone 16e.

Its biggest upgrade is the 50MP Quad Pixel main rear camera, replacing the G04’s 16MP sensor. It also has a larger 5,200mAh battery and an official IP52 water-repellant rating, the latter of which means the phone won’t mind a light sprinkling of liquid.

The Moto G15 has the same main camera and also a 5MP ultra-wide camera, a new addition to the range. It also shares the same water-repellant rating and battery capacity. Like the G14 from 2023, the Moto G15 sports a 1080p display but a 60Hz refresh rate, favouring resolution over motion.

On the inside, both phones use a variation of the MediaTek Helio G81 Extreme processor; the G15’s clock speed is slightly higher. Similarly, each phone has 4GB of physical RAM which is expandable up to 12GB by using spare storage as virtual memory. On that note, the G05 has 64GB of built-in storage, while the G15 has 128GB.

Both phones are out now in Australia, with the Moto G15 priced at $229, while the Moto G05 costs $179. Each one gets a variety of fun-sounding colours too; the G15 gets Gravity Grey, Sunrise Orange, and Iguana Green, and the G05 comes in Plum Red, Forest Green, and Misty Blue, with Fresh Lavender exclusive to Big W.
