Vodafone takes $120 off phone plans as its coverage grows

Coinciding with a major network expansion, Vodafone has a big deal on its postpaid phone plans, offering a 12-month discount and double the usual amount of data.

Every SIM-only plan currently has a $10 monthly discount for the first year, working out to save $120 in total. The deal also includes double data, starting at 100GB per month, while the biggest plan includes a whopping 720GB. Keep in mind that the offer is only for new connections, so existing customers can’t take advantage.

With the discounts, Vodafone’s monthly plans cost $39, $49, and $59 respectively, as seen in the table below.

Vodafone’s network boost comes courtesy of a recent partnership between its parent company, TPG Telecom, and Optus, which was approved by the ACCC last year. With access to more infrastructure, Vodafone bumped up its network coverage to 98.4% of the Australian population, just shy of Optus’ 98.5% reach. Previously, Vodafone only covered 96%; it is now much more competitive among the telcos that offer Australia’s best network coverage.

Compared to Optus and Telstra, the current Vodafone deal is comfortably cheaper than other postpaid phone plans. Optus starts at $52 per month, while Telstra’s cheapest monthly plan costs $65.

Plans from the big three telcos aren’t the only option, however. Australia’s cheapest SIM plans also include a range of deals from mobile virtual network operators (MVNOs), that provide affordable access to one of the main telco’s networks. Keep an eye out for Kogan Mobile and Lyca Mobile, two Vodafone MVNOs set to benefit.

Above all, the competition added by Vodafone’s more far-reaching network should help Australians find a better deal more easily. When everyone’s feeling the financial pinch, it’s good to have more high-quality options to choose from.
