Top-reviewed Aussie locations revealed as Google Maps turns 20

Now synonymous with getting from point A to point B, Google Maps is celebrating its 20th anniversary by highlighting Australia’s most popular locations.

Eateries, shops, and tourist attractions are heavily featured among Australia’s most reviewed locations on the well-known navigation app. In 2024 alone, Google Maps users navigated a trillion kilometres’ worth of directions across the globe. To provide a reference point, the Earth’s circumference is 40,075 kilometres. That’s a lot of directions.

Google might be known as a global tech behemoth, but its well-known maps feature has a local origin story. It began as a Sydney-based project by Where 2 Technologies, which then became Google Maps as we know it now.

Most reviewed Google Maps locations in Australia

As published in a recent blog post, Australia’s most popular locations on Google Maps vary from Indian restaurants to museums, and everything in between. Here are some of the standouts per category based on the number of reviews:

Google Maps has evolved over the years beyond a simple navigation app. In 2022, it added the ability to look up air quality, which is particularly helpful during Australia’s bushfire season. Google also provided a Street View update that lets users virtually ride on Sydney’s commuter ferries.
