Australian sports fans living in remote areas were recently dealt a double blow, with sports streamer Kayo, in addition to Binge, set to stop transmission in locations designated “very remote”. The move follows an impending price increase that’ll bump Kayo Premium up to $40 a month.
Kayo users in affected locations began receiving emails in January about a change in Foxtel’s distribution rights that meant Foxtel would become “the sole authorised provider of Foxtel Group premium content in these areas.” Some Australians won’t be able to access Kayo Sports, Binge, Flash, and LifeStyle from 3 March 2025 onwards.
Support pages for Kayo Sports and Binge reference the Australian Bureau of Statistics definition of “very remote”. It’s based on several factors, including population, access to services, and road distance to other populated areas.
Impacted users will be “offered a Foxtel subscription at a comparative rate.” It’s not known what the offer is at this stage; the cheapest Kayo subscription starts at $25 per month, while Binge starts at $10. Meanwhile, the full price of the Foxtel sports bundle is $103 per month.
GadgetGuy has contacted Foxtel to clarify the aforementioned “comparative rate” and whether the changes also affect Hubbl users.
