Disney has confirmed that ESPN content will be available on the Disney+ streaming service in Australia and New Zealand “in the coming months”.
Joining the platform’s existing library of Disney movies and TV series, ESPN will add live sports and shows to Australian subscribers. Once live, both the ESPN and ESPN2 channels will be available via a Disney+ subscription.
The move adds further pressure on Foxtel’s dedicated sports streaming service Kayo, which recently increased its pricing and restricted access for Australians in “very remote” locations. ESPN is currently part of Kayo’s programming, airing American sports like the NBA, MLB, NHL, and NFL. Its main point of difference now will be Fox Sports-exclusive content, including Formula 1, AFL, and NRL.
According to the official announcement, all Premium ($17.99 per month) and Standard Disney+ ($13.99 per month) subscribers will get access to ESPN in Australia and New Zealand.
For fans of American sports, it’s more affordable than the starting price of $25 per month for Kayo. However, Fetch TV has one of the most affordable ways to access ESPN in Australia via its $6 monthly Vibe Pack.
Disney hasn’t yet confirmed when exactly ESPN will go live on its streaming service. ESPN first came to Disney+ in Latin America in June 2024, followed by North America in December. Australia and New Zealand will be the “first English-speaking markets outside of North America” to get the sports channel on Disney+, even before the UK.
Other than airing overseas programming, ESPN also includes local content, including the men’s and women’s NBL. Australians tuning into ESPN for the Super Bowl saw a unique broadcast specific to the region, unlike Seven Network which picked up the overseas Fox Sports feed.
