New Tonies in Australia include a rather concerned-looking rabbit

Tonieboxes, or Tonies, are a staple in the homes of parents who want their children to have educational experiences without having to navigate the minefield of screen time. I consider them one of the essential gadgets for new parents. This month, the company behind the Toniebox launched a new range of Tonies figures that bring a range of new experiences to children.

The system works similarly to Disney Infinity and Skylanders, in that you put a figurine on a base and it launches content. Kids can also play with the toys away from the base, making it a more interactive experience. In this case, the base is the Toniebox, a soft speaker designed to put up with the abuse only a toddler could dish out to an object they love.

As the mother of an eight-month-old baby, my favourite of the new Tonies is the Favourite Children’s Songs, Sing-Along With Rabbit Tonie. It’s technically for ages 3+, but my daughter and I have loved listening to and singing along with the songs. The “Clap Your Hands” song has become one of her favourites. We sing it anytime she seems a bit sad or needs to be entertained and she’s thrilled.

I also like that the rabbit looks like it’s haunted by its past and hopes that if it clangs the cymbals loudly enough, they will drown out its thoughts. So relatable.

Having now read our library of Spot books approximately 1,000 times, I look forward to her being old enough to enjoy the Spot Tonie, which features Spot stories being read by acclaimed actor David Oyelowo.

The Mindfulness: Meditation with Mo The Sloth Tonie is a hit with the whole family at bedtime. On a personal note, I just really enjoy the Disney Aladdin and Disney Jasmine Tonies. The Creative-Tonie (Doctor) would also be lovely for distant relatives to be able to record themselves reading a story to give to kids to stay connected.
