Sci-fi seemed to be the flavour of the February 2025 PlayStation State of Play presentation, with a lot of futuristic games coming to Sony’s console soon.
Streamed live online earlier today, the latest State of Play saw many familiar faces mixed with fresh blood. Sonic got his time in the sun, as did Naked Snake and Pinocchio (a sentence I never thought I’d write).
Among the packed State of Play livestream, here are seven major announcements to look out for.
Biggest PlayStation State of Play announcements
Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds changes the tracks mid-race
It’s easy to dismiss the Sonic Racing series as a mere Mario Kart imitator, but to do so would be selling it short. Previous entries have been fun arcade racers in their own right, so it’s great to see a new entry on the way.
Sonic Racing Cross World got an official reveal trailer during State of Play, showing off some flashy gameplay. Its cool hook is the ability to warp to completely different-looking tracks mid-race, suggesting that every race will play differently.
Sonic’s new zoom-’em-up doesn’t have a release date yet, although a closed network test is scheduled for 21 February, so it can’t be too far away.
Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater has a release date, with monkeys
Long-neglected Ape Escape fans got some love from Astro Bot last year, and now they’re eating again thanks to… Metal Gear Solid?
Alongside a confirmed release date of 28 August, Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater brings the PS2 classic back with the Ape Escape mini-game. Even when the world’s at stake, there’s still time in a political espionage game for hunting monkeys.
Lies of P gets a prequel expansion
One of my favourite ‘soulslike’ games outside of FromSoftware’s catalogue, Lies of P has a prequel on the way, Overture. It’s a DLC expansion that adds to the original game, providing more background to the fascinating take on a beloved fairytale character.
Lies of P: Overture is scheduled to come out during our winter, so it won’t be long until you can embody the deadly puppet once again.
A new look at the thrilling Directive 8020
Supermassive Games has carved out a niche in the choose-your-own-adventure space, which looks to continue with Directive 8020. This one takes on a sci-fi twist, as a spaceship’s crew attempts to survive while a deceptive alien threat looms large.
Directive 8020 is out on 30 September, and it looks like a thrilling time.
Battle as a powerful android in Metal Eden
Continuing the science fiction theme, Metal Eden is billed as “an adrenaline-rush sci-fi FPS.” Based on the reveal trailer, that sounds about right.
It looks stylish, frenetic, and full of synth beats, just the way I like it. It’s not far away either; Metal Eden is out on PS5 on 6 May.
MindsEye has GTA meets Cyberpunk vibes
What if Grand Theft Auto had a thriller sci-fi plot with a touch of Cyberpunk? That’s the gist of MindsEye, an action-packed game that combines vehicular combat with on-foot gameplay.
There’s no exact release date yet other than a winter 2025 window for southern hemisphere folk.
Returnal devs return with Saros
I’m a simple man: I see Housemarque and immediately pay attention. Saros is the next game from the Returnal developer, which instantly means it’s worth keeping tabs on.
The cinematic trailer features actor Rahul Kohli in a sci-fi desert facing off against some kind of unholy abomination. Other than that, the details are vague. That’s to be expected, considering Saros isn’t out until 2026.
