Drastically revamped Gen 4 iPhone SE expected this week

Apple is expected to announce its fourth-generation iPhone SE as early as this week, which will overhaul the brand’s entry-level model.

Bloomberg tech journalist Marc Gurman reported that Apple will have a relatively low-key announcement for the device. Instead of hosting a launch event, the Gen 4 iPhone SE will shadow-drop on Apple’s website, ready for a February release date.

A recently leaked video suggested that the refreshed phone will abandon the home button seen on the older 2022 model. Based on Gurman’s reporting, expect a full-screen design akin to the iPhone 14, and a move to USB-C connectivity.

Interestingly, the Gen 4 iPhone SE won’t skimp on power. It reportedly uses the same A18 chipset used by the 2024 iPhone 16 range to enable Apple Intelligence functionality. That also means 8GB of RAM is likely, a notable upgrade Apple gave its base iPhones last year.

Launching in February will give the updated iPhone SE plenty of breathing room away from the expected iPhone 17 launch in September. This year’s iPhones have been tipped to feature more substantial changes than previous iterations.

One of the most notable changes to the line-up is the rumoured iPhone 17 Air, a slimmer phone set to replace the ‘Plus’ model of recent years. Samsung has already teased the Galaxy S25 Edge, setting the stage for a slim phone showdown.

iPhone sales are slightly down, but Apple still made plenty of money from its other products. Across Apple’s other divisions, Gurman also reported plans for an M4 MacBook Air, new entry-level iPads, and an updated iPad Air over the next few months.

For now, a new iPhone SE should help Apple compete more strongly in the affordable phone market, a category it hasn’t updated in nearly three years.
