Apple is planning to bolster its gaming credentials with a new app set to replace Game Center, which has been the brand’s gaming hub since 2010. Bloomberg‘s Mark Gurman reported the news, saying the app will be a centralised place across Apple devices for accessing games, playing with friends, and viewing leaderboards.
WWDC, Apple’s annual developer conference, is only a couple of weeks away, which would make sense for a major app announcement. All the while, Apple also recently acquired RAC7, the two-person Canadian studio behind Sneaky Sasquatch, one of the most popular games on Apple Arcade.
It’s the first game studio acquisition by Apple, potentially signalling a renewed push towards gaming after launching the subscription-based Apple Arcade service in 2019. Apple has made efforts in recent years to make Macs easier for game developers to work with, culminating in Assassin’s Creed Shadows launching on Mac at the same time as other platforms.
