Reolink Altas includes a handy pre-recording security feature

Security cameras are handy devices, but some of them can miss critical information if they don’t support pre-roll recording. Reolink aims to solve this with its new Altas camera, capable of capturing footage 10 seconds before it detects motion.

Priced at $229 in Australia, the Reolink Altas records in 2K resolution, equipped with a 4MP sensor to monitor your property. The camera uses a wide ƒ1.0 aperture to record clear night vision in colour.

Unlike an increasing number of security cameras, the Reolink Altas supports local storage, like the Lorex range. It means you don’t need to solely rely on cloud storage, which often requires a paid subscription. Plenty of the Altas’ features don’t require a subscription, either. People, animal, and vehicle detection come included with the cost of the camera.

Reolink advertises the pre-recording feature as being able to record more footage than by just relying on motion detection alone. Some security cameras will likely record your dog getting agitated at something in the front yard, but not what aggravated them in the first place. It’s the sort of thing the Altas aims to address, capturing more than just reactions.

Pre-recording does use more battery power, however. Equipped with a 20,000mAh battery, the Reolink Altas lasts up to 14 days with pre-recording enabled. With the feature disabled, the battery life leaps up to 540 days. Reolink’s solution is a six-watt solar panel, keeping the camera operational all year round.

The Reolink Altas is available to pre-order now ready for its launch on 27 May. If you pre-order it ahead of time via Reolink’s website, you’ll receive a 15% off code to use on the Altas and solar panel bundle.
