Internet speed confusion leads to paying more money

Everyone wants the fastest internet speed possible, but not everyone actually needs a high-speed connection.

Local telco SpinTel recently found that more than a third of Australians don’t understand how internet speed is measured. Locally, most plans are advertised in megabits per second (Mbps), referencing how fast data transfers over the internet. Realistically, if you only use the internet to watch Netflix in HD, a 25Mbps plan is more than adequate.

There’s little point in having a 100Mbps plan or above if all you want to do is stream videos, browse the web, and check emails. That’d be like taking a Ferrari around the corner to buy milk; it’s nice, but excessive.

Next time you’re tempted by a great deal on NBN internet, take a moment to consider if you’ll actually take full advantage.
