Do you ever feel that listening to loud, fast-paced music makes you drive more aggressively? New research shows that the tunes you listen to can influence your driving behaviour.
A study commissioned by Allianz Australia found that songs over 120 beats per minute had the most significant impact on crucial decision-making competencies, “such as the tendency to speed, alertness and reaction time.”
So cranking up the Foo Fighters’ – “Everlong”, or even Lady Gaga’s “Poker Face”, might make you a bit of a jerk behind the wheel.
To help people drive more responsibly, Allianz has created a service called “Seat Belters” which is a new in-app Spotify experience that generates playlists “designed to promote safer driving habits”.
Here are a few other fun tracks above 120bpm to be wary of:
- Dua Lipa – “Don’t Start Now” – 124 BPM
- Katy Perry – “Teenage Dream” – 120 BPM
- Beyoncé – “Break My Soul” – 124 BPM
- Michael Jackson – “Don’t Stop ‘Til You Get Enough” – 129 BPM
- Avicii – “Wake Me Up” – 124 BPM
- David Guetta ft. Sia – “Titanium” – 126 BPM
- Daft Punk – “One More Time” – 123 BPM
The study also found that of the 32 per cent that are impacted by music, nearly one in three (28 per cent), admit that the pace or tempo makes them drive faster, and 33 per cent noted a decrease in overall concentration.
The research was conducted by Pureprofile, an Australian owned Data and Insights business that sampled over 1000 Australians aged 18+ who hold a valid driver’s license and listen to music while driving.
