Scream and glass breaking detection comes to Arlo cameras

Home security is getting an upgrade to respond smarter to sound, not just visuals, courtesy of Arlo’s new Advanced Audio Detection update.

Dog barks, screams, and breaking glass all trigger notifications through Arlo’s smart security devices, letting you know something is happening, even if cameras can’t see it yet. The Advanced Audio Detection features are part of an Arlo Secure Plus subscription, which starts at $15 per month in Australia.

Compatible Arlo cameras use the technology to recognise sounds that might indicate some level of danger. When the camera detects the sound of glass breaking or a dog barking, it’ll send a notification to your phone along with live footage so you can monitor the situation.

The same applies if a camera hears a nearby scream; it’ll notify you in case there’s an emergency. Arlo’s Advanced Audio Detection also identifies the sound of gunshots. Although guns aren’t as prevalent in Australia as in other parts of the world, the feature aims to keep you safe in times of potential danger.

These audio-based detection features add to a range of smart alerts added by Arlo in recent months. Earlier in the year, the brand’s cameras received a fire detection update that uses AI technology to detect flames before they get out of hand.

Prior to that, Arlo added detailed person and vehicle detection features to its subscription service which recently surpassed five million subscribers. Instead of simply alerting you whenever a person or car enters a camera’s vision, it identifies the identity of the specific person or car in question. It’s a way of knowing when a child is coming home from school versus an unknown person arriving at your doorstep.

Arlo also confirmed that its affordable Essential Indoor 2K & Wired Floodlight devices will support Arlo Secure Plus features starting this month. More details about the audio detection features are available on Arlo’s website.
